Community Dental Hygiene Clinic
A recent survey of the Oral Health status among First Nations in Ontario (www.health.coo.org) demonstrated the need for better access to preventive oral health care.
It is well known that a person’s oral health is closely linked to other chronic diseases and to physical and mental well-being.
Registered Dental Hygienists that are authorized to self-initiate (meaning work independently in their own clinic) and have applied to be included in the NIHB Pilot Project are allowed to direct bill for preventive services.
This removes the barrier of only allowing dentists to direct bill for preventive services and allows for improved access to oral health care and more choices as to your dental hygiene care provider.
To support First Nations people and Inuit in reaching an overall health status that is comparable with other Canadians, Health Canada's Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program provides coverage for a limited range of these goods and services when they are not insured elsewhere.
Dental Hygiene Smiles provides the following services billable to NIHB:
- scaling (cleaning)
- polish (plaque and stain removal)
- fluoride depending on age of client
- extra scaling (cleaning) can be requested to NIHB which is determined by the client's oral health
